The Cardiac PET Industry Coalition (CPIC) has submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in support of proposed refinements to the nuclear medicine Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APCs) for calendar year 2027.
Under the proposed rule, CMS would reassign certain cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) procedures from new technology APCs to APC 5594, Level 4 Nuclear Medicine and Related Services. CPIC supports the proposed reassignments, noting that the affected procedures are clinically similar, require comparable resources and are appropriately assigned to the same APC.
CPIC has urged CMS to finalize the nuclear medicine APC refinements as proposed. These policies support continued patient access to cardiac PET, an important tool in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease and in guiding invasive procedures.
